Zerodha Co-founder Nikhil Kamath Backs Gaming industry: Is ‘Esport’ Next Big Thing For India?

Nikhil Kamath, the founder of Zerodha, recently said that esports is the next big thing for India. Zerodha is a discount brokerage firm that is now considered to be the biggest broking firm in the country. 

Kamath is a self-made entrepreneur who made it to the Forbes Billionaires List both in 2020 and 2023. Additionally, he has over 13 years of experience in software development. He posted a In a Twitter post today, he stated some interesting information about the Indian gaming and Esports industry. He also describes the potential the industry holds to surpass the massive Movie and Music Industries combined! 

Kamath further said that the interactive forms of content will be the most sought-after forms of entertainment over the next decade. And Esports will act as a great platform to invest in. He also believes that the industry will also beat the IPL Cricket teams.

In the Twitter thread shared by Kamath, one can observe interesting information about the Indian gaming industry. According to Kamath’s tweet currently there are over 50,000 people employed in the industry. From these 15,000 are programmers and developers.  The numbers are set to increase and it is predicted that over 1 Lakh jobs will be available by the end of the financial year. This will be across various jobs roles like game developers, animators, graphic designers, game journalists, web analysts etc. These details were published by a report titled Gaming: Tomorrow’s Blockbuster.

Nikhil also pointed out that Esports can possibly be the next big thing in India. With the potential to generate an economic value of over 100 billion INR by 2025, the prize pool of Esports events are also certainly expected to beat the prize pool of the widely-known Indian Premier League by 2025. 

The prize pool will reportedly touch a massive 1 Billion INR as opposed to the 650 Million INR for the IPL. The Indian government officially accepted Esports as a multi-sport event on 23rd December 2022.  The esports industry is expected to reach 11 Billion INR in revenue by 2025. 

Reports also suggested that Indians contributed to 17% of the global downloads in 2022. This was the highest across several countries. Additionally, the industry also recorded $2.6 Billion USD in revenue in the same year. It is expected to reach an impressive $8.6 Billion USD in 2027.
