The highly anticipated television anime adaptation of Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe’s “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” manga is set to make history with its upcoming premiere. The official Twitter account of the anime recently revealed the captivating key visual, created by character designer Reiko Nagasawa and concept artist Seiko Yoshioka. Fans are thrilled as the anime is slated to debut with a special two-hour episode on September 29 at 9:00 p.m. JST (8:00 a.m. EDT) on NTV’s “Kinyō Roadshow.” Notably, this marks the first-ever television anime series to premiere in this coveted programming block, traditionally reserved for feature films. Following the special, the anime will continue with further episodes in October, airing in NTV’s new anime timeslot.

Synopsis and Characters

Licensed by Viz Media, “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” follows the journey of Frieren, an elf mage, after her adventures culminate in the defeat of the Demon King, bringing peace to the land. However, Frieren is faced with the reality of her own near-immortality as she outlives her comrades. In the wake of a friend’s funeral, she embarks on a new adventure to fulfill their last wishes, gradually learning the true essence of life and its significance to those around her. The titular character Frieren is portrayed by the talented Atsumi Tanezaki, accompanied by a stellar cast, including Nobuhiko Okamoto as Himmel, Hiroki Touchi as Heiter, and Yōji Ueda as Eisen.

Creative Team’s Take On Recreating the Manga Poster

With Madhouse at the helm, the anime boasts a team of experienced creators who promise to deliver a visually stunning and emotionally gripping adaptation. Director Keiichirō Saitō, known for his work on “Bocchi the Rock!,” is leading the project, while Tomohiro Suzuki, acclaimed for his contributions to “One-Punch Man” and “Boogiepop and Others,” is responsible for the series scripts. 

Character designer Reiko Nagasawa, also serving as Chief Animation Director, has worked on notable projects like “Takt op. With regards to the stunning new key visual for the Frieren anime, Reiko Nagasawa, the brilliant character designer, shared her insights. Its widespread appeal is further evidenced by its inclusion in the American Library Association’s Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table (GNCRT) top ten list of 2022 Best Graphic Novels for Adults.
