The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Into Reverie – Review| Storyline, Positives & More

1 years ago By AI Smith

The famous franchise of Nihon Falcom has finally received its continuation on Nintendo Switch. Thanks to the localization at the hands of NISA, this title has finally seen its debut outside the Japanese region. Trails into Reverie is the finale that closes a very long era for The Legend of Heroes, bringing the end of the Erebonia and Crossbell arcs, as well as ushering in the future of this great JRPG saga.

First of all, what should we know about Trails into Reverie? First of all, The Legend of Heroes is a franchise that has spanned more than two decades, with around 10 installments to date that tells and establish the gigantic story of the continent of Zemuria. Of course, it is assumed that the player must know the previous titles, as Reverie functions as a sort of epilogue to Cold Steel, as well as the two recently localized Crossbell games. However, it’s best to have experienced all the Trails has to offer up to this point.

Three Interconnected Paths

In Trails into Reverie, we will be able to follow the routes of three different figures: the detective of the Special Support Section and hero of Crossbell, Lloyd Bannings; Curse of Erebonia Sacrifice and ex-Valimar pilot Rean Schwarzer; and a mysterious new figure that emerges from the shadows, taking the name “C”.

Thanks to the Trails to Walk system, we can freely immerse ourselves in each of its paths and witness how their stories are intertwined with each other. Of course, the strength of this franchise is its incredible storytelling and world-building that advance with each entry, and Reverie is no exception. Veterans of the franchise will notice certain similarities to Trails in the Sky the 3rd in how the narrative is divided and handled, as well as the way it delves into sub-stories about key figures in its extensive cast of characters.

In a way, we could say that it works as a bridge that opens the franchise to a new future since the next entry in the saga (Kuro no Kiseki) is intended as a new entry point that will continue to expand this wide and captivating universe. There are dozens of previously thought-out details in these titles, and Reverie takes the perfect format to present many of these ideas and concepts that we will rediscover as the franchise progresses.

Although narratively the conclusion of its last arc left something to be desired, it is more than evident that Trails into Reverie tries to undo its past mistakes and offer the final climactic that the Cold Steel arc has been building since its inception. Therefore, it complies with its plot and offers us even more amazing moments and scenes that will last in our memory for a long time. It is simply incredible to be able to see the entire cast of Crossbell once again reunited and ready for a new adventure as if it were a third title in his story arc. Of course, we would have liked Liberl to receive the relevance it deserves in a hypothetical route and that they not forget a certain green-haired priest among others.

In turn, we can also enjoy the True Reverie Corridor, where we will team up with a multitude of characters in randomly generated dungeons and multiple minigames.

A flash of steel and immovable barriers

The game engine is based on the previous titles, Cold Steel III and Cold Steel IV, so the gameplay and graphics persist with certain improvements added. In terms of gameplay, The Legend of Heroes makes use of a charismatic turn-based combat system where strategy is everything. We will be able to use normal attacks, arts, crafts, orders and S-crafts, among others, and our way of managing them will decide the result. Likewise, we will be able to equip our characters with typical RPG objects, as well as an orbment whose quartz will build the repertoire of available arts.

For the veterans of the saga, we will be able to notice new additions such as the possibility of seeing directly from the arts menu which ones are effective against our enemies, the United Front mechanics or the return of the gallery and cinematics section.

All things considered, the gameplay remains the same delight as always, and thanks to the possibility offered by these titles to activate the “turbo” mode, we can comfortably adapt the pace of the game as well as accelerate in those tedious segments.

The mystical nucleus of its graphic and musical section

Its graphic section continues to be derived from the latest installments as we have previously stressed, so, indeed, it is somewhat behind today’s standards. However, it must also be considered that Trails into Reverie is originally a 2020 release, although it does not subtract from the recycling present in its development. However, the version of the title on Nintendo Switch leaves something to be desired in terms of its performance, where the frame rate can drop from time to time.

When it comes to music there simply aren’t enough words in this world to describe the works of art that Falcom Sound Team jdk consistently produces on each title. Reverie is no exception, and it has an extraordinary soundtrack that will exponentially elevate our gaming experience. Without a doubt, for us, it is one of the strongest sections of both this installment and the entire saga.

Conclusion of our analysis of Trails into Reverie

In case it hasn’t been clear at this point in the analysis, Trails into Reverie is a title that requires prior knowledge of the franchise to be enjoyed to the fullest. It doesn’t work as an entry point for new fans, so we can only recommend it (and highly) to those already fans of the series who have experienced the previous games. Even if the Switch version of the game isn’t the best, it’s still an enjoyable experience. And for those interested in discovering this wonderful franchise that shines in its own RPG niche, it’s best to start from scratch with Trails in the Sky.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie has texts and voices in English and Japanese, so Spanish is absent. It will be available on July 7 both in physical and digital format at €59.99 with a storage space of 10227.00MB. Kiseki’s future looks hopeful, like trails in the sky.
